Why We Do What We Do…
“A study by the World Bank Group in 2023 concluded that poverty in Sri Lanka has risen significantly since 2019. The poverty rate increased from 11.3% to 12.7% in 2020, adding over 300,000 new poor in that period. This trend continued in 2021 and doubled between 2021 and 2022, from 13% to 25%, bringing an additional 2.5 million people into poverty by 2022.”
Rising Poverty Levels
Did you know? As of 2023, 7 million Sri Lankans (31% of the population) live below the national poverty line, a significant increase since 2019.
Food Insecurity
47% of households have reduced meal sizes, and 33% are eating fewer meals daily due to economic challenges.

Over 203,000 children have missed school in the past month due to families' inability to afford basic needs.
Ineffective Social Assistance
Despite 25+ social assistance programs, many of those eligible are left without support.
Challenges in Accessing Aid
The average wait for assistance from the Samurdhi program is 3 years and 9 months.
