Who we are?
The Deshantha Foundation, established in 2022 by Desh Amila, a Sri Lankan Australian filmmaker and storyteller, is an upcoming force in Sri Lanka’s community development landscape, dedicated to eradicating poverty through innovative, research-driven, and community-centered initiatives.
Who is Desh?
Desh Amila is an entrepreneur, producer and educator. Born in Sri Lanka, Desh moved to Melbourne, Australia where, in 2011, he founded Think Inc – the world’s first touring company to exclusively tour internationally recognized educators, thought-leaders and scientists. The pandemic led Desh to launch This is 42 – a multimedia platform – host to some of the world’s most influential thinkers. Desh has also produced multiple award winning documentaries, including “Better Left Unsaid ” and “Islam and the Future of Tolerance”. In 2024, Desh co-founded Dissident Dialogues – the world’s largest heterodox intellectual event.
After graduating from Melbourne’s Deakin University with a Bachelor of Arts (Media Arts: Screen Studies and Photography) in 2005, Desh soon realized that this was merely his first step into a world of many successes, many more uncertainties, painful growths and profound realizations.
Together, we are transforming lives and building a brighter future.
Desh AMila
Australian filmmaker and storytellerThe Origin Story of the Deshantha Foundation
Desh founded the Deshantha Foundation out of a deep concern for the rising levels of poverty in Sri Lanka. It all began when he read a BBC article about malnourished mothers struggling to provide for their families. This powerful story struck a chord with him, sparking a sense of urgency that he couldn’t ignore. As he delved deeper into the statistics, he discovered that Sri Lanka’s national poverty line had tripled in just over a decade.
Recognizing the critical need for action, we set out to make a difference. Last year, we managed to support 30 families with essential supplies, but we knew that this was just the beginning. The economic crisis had escalated the struggles of those who were once self-sufficient, leaving many grappling for basic necessities. We realized that this was a call to arms for all of us at the foundation.
At the Deshantha Foundation, we believe that poverty is more than a lack of income; it’s a lack of opportunities and hope. That’s why we are committed to tackling this issue through research-driven initiatives and community engagement. Our mission is clear: by addressing the root causes of poverty and providing sustainable support, we aim to create lasting change in the lives of those we serve.
Together, we are determined to turn the tide against poverty and inspire hope for a brighter future.
