Rationing Hope
During the economic crisis, many low-income families struggled to access necessities. Our Rationing Hope campaign distributed dry rations to these families, offering a lifeline and ensuring they had enough food to get through challenging times.
It started with a BBC article that highlighted the heartbreaking reality of malnutrition in Sri Lanka. The images and stories were a stark reminder of how desperate things had become—resembling the hardships faced during the civil war. After reading that, it wasn’t something Desh could just scroll past.
Desh reached out to contacts in Sri Lanka to verify the situation. The feedback was immediate and clear: entire communities were struggling just to put basic food on the table. Initially planning to support 10 families, it quickly became evident that the need was far greater. In response, we expanded our efforts to assist 20 to 30 families, providing essentials like milk, rice, and dried fish—items that would last at least a month.
The aid was distributed at a local tea plantation, where families gathered to receive the supplies. Even the plantation superintendent, who had no prior connection to the initiative, was moved. He approached Desh’s father and shared that he would encourage his son, also living in Australia, to do something similar.
This story isn’t just about providing food—it’s about inspiring action. Rationing Hope was born out of the belief that small, targeted efforts can spark something bigger. As long as there are families in need, we’ll keep pushing forward and invite others to join us in this journey of rebuilding hope, one step at a time.
