Paving Pathways
In rural villages, lack of proper infrastructure can hinder economic opportunities and access to essential services. The Paving Pathways campaign is focused on constructing roads to improve accessibility and create economic opportunities for these communities, fostering development and growth.
Desh’s childhood in Sri Lanka was marked by long, grueling journeys through winding, poorly maintained roads. Traveling from Colombo to Badulla in the 80s and 90s was an ordeal, often taking up to 10 hours, with treacherous routes that left many, including Desh, feeling sick from the constant twists and bumps. Though infrastructure in some areas has improved, there are still remote regions where even basic roads are a luxury.
One such area holds special significance for Desh—it’s the village where his grandmother lives. The path leading to her home, used daily by local farmers and villagers, is barely accessible. Farmers, including Desh’s own uncles, often have to carry their produce by hand because vehicles can’t navigate the rough terrain.
Despite attempts to get local authorities involved, the project was always dismissed due to budget constraints. Seeing no other option, Desh decided to fund the construction himself. Though it was a costly endeavor, he focused on paving as much of the road as possible with the resources available. This initiative wasn’t just about easing the burden on his family; it was about uplifting an entire community.
Paving Pathways reflects Desh’s commitment to addressing the needs of those in underserved areas, even when the challenges are deeply personal. By improving this essential route, Desh hopes to inspire others to take action where it matters most, starting from the ground up.
