Backpacks for Tomorrow
This campaign focuses on providing essential educational materials to school children in need. We aim to support the education and future of young students in impoverished areas, giving them the tools they need to succeed.
For Desh, education has always been a cornerstone of his journey. Growing up in rural Sri Lanka as the son of school teachers, he experienced the limitations firsthand—wearing shoes until they fell apart and sharing textbooks among classmates. Despite these challenges, Desh knew he was one of the lucky ones. Many of his peers didn’t even have the basics like proper shoes or school supplies.
Years later, a conversation with his father led Desh back to the schools he once attended. What he found was disheartening: time had seemingly stood still. The classrooms, facilities, and even the challenges faced by students were almost identical to those from decades ago. While urban schools in Sri Lanka have seen significant development, these rural institutions remain stuck in the past, leaving their students at a disadvantage.
Determined to make a difference, Desh launched the Backpacks for Tomorrow project, starting with one of his former schools. The goal was simple but impactful: provide essential school supplies like backpacks, shoes, and stationery to students in need. For the initial phase, Desh focused on supporting one semester, with plans to extend this aid to other schools, including his former high school.
This project is more than just charity for Desh—it’s a way of giving back to the community that shaped him while addressing the stark inequalities in education. By investing in these students, Desh hopes to empower the next generation to reach their full potential, no matter where they start.
